Trump Ready to Meet North Korean Leader
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump declared Monday his readiness to sit down with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un if Pyongyang's chief expresses interest in dialogue during the American leader's imminent South Korea stop.
"I'd love to meet with him if he'd like to meet, I got along great with Kim Jong Un. If he wants to meet, I'll be in South Korea," Trump stated to journalists traveling with him on Air Force One during a flight segment from Malaysia to Japan, part of his broader Asia swing.
When pressed on whether he might prolong his itinerary to accommodate such a meeting, Trump replied: "I haven't thought of it, but I think the answer would be, yeah."
The American president recently characterized North Korea as a "sort of nuclear power," signaling receptiveness to renewed negotiations with Kim. "If he'd like to meet, I'm open to it," he said.
Pyongyang previously indicated willingness to convene if Washington acknowledges its atomic weapons program, which Kim maintains is "irreversible."
The two heads of state previously convened in 2019 within the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas.
Trump's schedule includes arriving in South Korea Wednesday for discussions with President Lee Jae Myung, followed by an address at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO luncheon and participation in a US-APEC leaders working dinner.
A bilateral summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled for Thursday.
