Trump reaffirms his willing to meet N. Korea’s leader

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said Monday that he is open to meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his upcoming visit to South Korea, should Kim wish to hold talks.

"I'd love to meet with him if he'd like to meet, I got along great with Kim Jong Un. If he wants to meet, I'll be in South Korea," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One while en route from Malaysia to Japan during his Asia tour.

When asked if he might extend his trip for such a meeting, Trump replied, "I haven't thought of it, but I think the answer would be, yeah."

His remarks followed recent comments in which he referred to North Korea as a "sort of nuclear power" and said, "If he'd like to meet, I'm open to it."

According to reports, North Korea has indicated that talks could take place if the US acknowledges its nuclear status, which Kim has called “irreversible.”

The two leaders last met in 2019 at the demilitarized zone separating North and South Korea.

Trump is expected to arrive in South Korea on Wednesday, where he will meet President Lee Jae Myung before addressing the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO luncheon and attending a US-APEC leaders’ working dinner. He is also scheduled to hold a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday.
